Busy times

A busy week concluded. We delivered several pieces over to the Cornish Colony Museum at its new location here on Main Street in Windsor in time for its grand opening on Saturday. A large crowd gathered to hear several luminaries including..... I was pleased to give a studio tour to Cliff Block (along with his wife Ann, a long time supporter) and The Muellers, Bob is the President of the BOD for the Museum).
On Monday the Windsor Veterans Memorial (phase II) was dedicated at the park. A large crowd was on hand to hear several speakers including Rep. Bernie Sanders who was responsible for securing $65,000.00 for the project. Rep. Sanders has been a great help not only by securing monies but also has been a strong vocal supporter of the Veterans Memorial. Our Chairman Bernie Shaban gave a moving speech thanking the committee and all of those who have supported the project over the last five years.
Im back in the studio working on the model for the Kinnick relief which will be wrapped up later this month.

"New Bronzes"

Last week I received a shipment of bronzes back from the foundry. These bronzes are 'Artist proofs' which means I have to approve the foundry work before I start an addition. There will have to be some adjustments on several of the works but these pieces are for sale. Please contact me about the works available. Things are busy

Things are busy, Kinnick is going well, and I should have the relief model complete at the end of June. At that time I will turn it over to Glenn Campbell of Campbell Plaster and Iron (foundry) for enlarging and he will drop off the 12’ standing Kinnick for finishing. We are completing work on phase II of the Windsor Veterans Memorial, which will be dedicated on Memorial Day weekend, and as always there are numerous other projects going on.

This is the Bas-Relief Portrait of mine which has been included in the show: "Maxfield Parrish; Master of Make-believe" show which is currently touring the country. 

The exhibition named "Maxfield Parrish, Master of Make Believe" will have over 50 items of Maxfield Parrish's work, including both the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney mural panels as well as the fully restored DuPont 1933 mural.

Boise unveiling a great success

I a related matter I am working on a prototype for a bas relief sculpture of Dan Holmes who was lost fighting fires For the Arrowhead hotshots,NPS on October of 2004. The relief will be a portrait of Dan inspired by a photo his mother Dee provided. It seems like 20 or more firefighters are lost each year protecting out land and holmes. My goal is to start a series of these tributes that could be incorporated at the existing monument (National Inter-agency Fire Center, Boise Idaho) in the form of a flowing wall. I would like to alter the state of "monumental thinking" that was started with the vietnam wall. These portraits would make the tribute far more personal to all who had the honor of seeing them at the site. An additional cast would be presented to the family of the fallen firefighter. A tribute like this would require contributions for the creation of the wall, the creation, casting and installation of the bas-relief portraits. The Cornish Colony Museum moves to Windsor

The Cornish Colony Museum is relocating from its home in Cornish, NH to Windsor, VT. May 2nd Unveiling at Boise International Airport/inspirational visit

Lawrence Nowlan’s Wildland Firefighter Statue Dedication Planned at Boise Airport
The Wildland Firefighter Foundation will dedicate the first public venue wildland firefighter statue at 3:00 p.m., May 2, 2005, at the Boise Airport. This statue is a tribute to the brave men and women who fight wildland fires and protect private and public lands, and natural resources.

This heroic sculpture was created by Lawrence Nowlan as one of the three that make up the National Wildland Firefighter Monument which was unveiled at the National Inter-agency Fire Center in May of 1998.The public is invited to attend this special event and the no host reception in the River Room, third floor, at the airport. The bronze statue is made possible through the wonderful generosity of the National Wildfire Suppression Association.

On a related note, last Saturday I was visited at the studio by Dee Burke and Nancy and Chuck Cosgrove. Dee lost her son Danny while he was fighting wildfires out west http://danholmes.org/ and received one of my bronze maquettes from the Wildland Firefighters Foundation. I have been working with the foundation since it started in 1998. http://wffoundation.org/ please take a second to check it out it will be worth your time. Their visit was very moving and they seem to enjoy it as much as I did.

SCORE is a non-for-profit organization which helps small business with mentoring, seminars and with on-line help ( www.score.org ). I have been working with a brilliant Fellow named Fred Thomas for several years now and he has helped me out tremendously.

Three days after this was posted, Connecticut Public Television contacted me about doing a profile on me and my relationship with Fred and SCORE. Greetings to LJN's "The Sculptor's Studio". On this blog I will be not only posting updates on current projects, future projects, past projects but also news on any shows or PR events.

• For instance today I was on hand as Miller Construction Company placed more than a dozen granite bolders in Constitution Common (Windsor, VT) to complete phase two of the Windsor Veterans Memorial. These bolders were sliced in half and the names of Veterans who left Windsor for the different conlicts were engraved on them. The Park was designed by Architect Robert Haight of Windsor. The unveiling of the finalized project will be held on Memorial Day weekend. Channel 3 news out of Burlington, VT and also Channel 31 news out of White River Junction covered the event and interviewed many of us. You will also find information in todays Valley News, Eagle Times and Rutland Herald.

• In August I was asked by the Trust for Museum Exhibitions if I would lend them my relief entitled "A tribute to Maxfield Parrish" for thier current show which is touring the country entitled "Maxfield Parrish - Master of Make Believe". • What I am spending the vast majority of my time on is a commission for The University of Iowa. I was commissioned in early February to create two pieces for the renovation of the historic Kinnick Stadium. Both pieces will feature the 1939 Hiesman trophy winner - Nile Kinnick. The first will be a standing figure of Nile dressed in student athlete garb which will stand 12' and sit on a 4' granite base. This monumental sculpture will stand in front of the main entrance to the stadium. The second piece will be a large high relief sculpture which is inspired by a famous photo of Nile breaking through the line of scrimmage on his way to scoring the winning touchdown against Notre dame during the '39 season. The final piece will measure 18'9" x 9'4" x 4' and contain 11 lifesize figures. The unveiling of both of these pieces will with God's help be during the 2006 Hawkeye season.
